Going Home to Thailand!

Christmas in Thailand

Christmas in Thailand

It’s Christmas season 2015 and I’m here in Vermont but this year – no snow! Can you believe that? Last year, my husband and I were in Thailand for Christmas so we didn’t have any snow there, of course. I think this year, Vermont will have as much snow as Thailand on Christmas Day. Very crazy!

Christmas in Thailand

Last year, we went to see the new “super mall” in Bang Na, called “Mega”. It is absolutely HUGE! They even have carts to drive you around the mall because it is so very big. Many people in the USA think that Thailand is jungle and banana trees but actually the areas on the outskirts of Bangkok have international stores that can compete with anything that the bigger cities in the USA have.

But I am so happy to go back to Thailand in January 2016. I miss a lot of things but especially my lovely family. After my family, I miss the FOOD!!! It will be so nice to enjoy all the fresh fruits, vegetables, sauces and spices that are so very hard to find in the USA. Also, there is nothing like fresh seafood so I will plan a trip to Bang Saen where you can buy fresh seafood, just off the boat and even have it cooked right on the docks. Then you just head for the beach, find an umbrella and enjoy.

Burlington, Vermont (though I love it so much), is like a small fishing village in Thailand compared to the huge number of stores, shops and malls we have even in our smaller, outlying towns. In Thailand, we have very small towns like Vermont and some very lovely fishing villages like Phayao which my husband really loves. The people are simple and kind and very friendly. The town is small but busy with lots of stores and places to find Thai food.

There are no shortages of places to eat in Thailand and we have so many different options to enjoy. In the USA, I see many chain restaurants everywhere but not a lot of choices. In Thailand there are many local places to eat, as well as the chain restaurants like McDonalds and Starbucks. There are also chains like MK and other places where you can cook your food, fresh at your table and it’s all you can eat (but they do restrict you to a time limit). So Thai food is never boring because we simply have so many choices!

My name is Kae and I was born in Thailand. I was trained as a chef at a prestigious hotel in Bangkok. After that, I owned and sold several seafood restaurants in Thailand. In 2012, I came to the USA and opened a Thai catering business which led to a full restaurant.
