Stowe Vermont

I think Stowe, VT is one my favorite places on earth. It is a cute little Vermont town that has a lot more going on than you would first think. When I first came to Stowe, honestly, I didn’t know what was so special about it. After all, it looked just like many other small towns in Vermont that I had seen before.

As a Thai chef, I think that what first caught my attention to Stowe was the large number of restaurants in such a small village. I have been fortunate over the past 5 years, to visit many of these restaurants and sample the quality of the food. While most have been simply wonderful, I must admit that I came across one or two that were not so good. But the ones that were good, were great!

Main Street in the village of Stowe is small but has some interesting stores with things you won’t find anywhere else. This is truly “old style” Vermont and I like it. The Green Mountain Inn is a very old place to stay with a classy restaurant underneath. It is a very traditional place and even has a friendly ghost that watches over people who work and stay at the Inn!

Of course the main attraction in Stowe is the ski resort. When I first came to Vermont, the ski area was small but charming. Over the past years, they have transformed it into a world class resort with a massive hotel, condos and shops, all at the resort. I kind of have mixed feelings about this. While it is grand and beautiful, the resort may be better suited to large areas, like Colorado rather than the relatively small hills of Vermont. To me, this huge resort takes away some of the charm that Stowe originally offered.


I also like to visit the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe and have been there many times. Yes, this is the place where the Von Trapp family (famous for the Sound of Music movie) came to live. The land is gorgeous and the mountain views spectacular. This is a must see place if you come to Stowe, VT.
